Camp Lejeune is a military base located in North Carolina. In 1982, industrial solvents were found in two water supplies. Subsequently, further studies found that these water systems were contaminated by more dangerous chemicals, such as trichloroethylene (TCE), perchloroethylene (PCE), and benzene, a known carcinogen, among others.
In 1989, the Environmental Protection Agency classified the Camp Lejeune area as one of the most contaminated places.
