Support for Camp Lejeune Victims

Agua contaminada de Camp Lejeune

Camp Lejeune is a military base located in North Carolina. From 1953 to 1987, many people who lived and/or worked around the base were exposed to water contamination, which had catastrophic consequences for them. For around 34 years, some toxic agents seeped into the soil from fuel depots, dry cleaners, and other places.

Nowadays, these people suffer from cancer and other health conditions that have complicated their quality of life, and in many cases, led to their own or their loved ones’ deaths.

The Problem

The problem is that millions of Marines and their families were 100% exposed to the water at Camp Lejeune. These people drank the water, cooked with it, and bathed in it, without realizing the danger they were in. Furthermore, this situation also affected their offspring, so babies born during this period suffered the consequences in equal measure. Some of these consequences are

  • Cancer
  • Neurological disorders
  • Spontaneous abortions
  • Infertility
  • Birth defects

In 1982, industrial solvents were found in two water supplies. Subsequently, further studies found that these water systems were contaminated by more dangerous chemicals, such as trichloroethylene (TCE), perchloroethylene (PCE), and benzene, a known carcinogen, among others.

In 1989, the Environmental Protection Agency classified the Camp Lejeune area as one of the most contaminated places.
