Ernesto Usma provides legal support to Abogados Centro Legal across a wide range of immigration matters. He shares our mission of helping immigrants achieve their dream of living freely and without fear in the United States. Ernesto is dedicated to assisting our clients and their families as they seek to obtain, extend, or maintain legal immigration status. He has helped many individuals reunite with loved ones through family petitions and immigration waivers, and he has also guided permanent residents through the process of becoming U.S. citizens.
Ernesto is a licensed attorney in Colombia, where he currently resides. He practiced law in Bogotá, serving as a legal advisor for the Bogotá Mayor’s Office, the Colombian House of Representatives, the Colombian Institute for Family Welfare, and the Office of the Ombudsman. After a successful legal career in South America, he moved to the United States, where he spent over 15 years working closely with the Latino community before returning to Colombia. Ernesto holds a specialization in Digital Marketing and a master’s degree in Law.
What was your first job?
My first job was at a clothing store when I was 15—I worked there during my school vacations!
How would you describe your job to a kindergarten class?
I help immigrants get the papers they need so they can work in the United States.
How did you start working for the firm? How long have you been with the firm?
I helped Robert Barber, the former owner of Abogados Centro Legal, open an office in Homewood. I’ve been with the firm since 2007.
What’s one skill you think everyone should learn?
I think learning how to communicate effectively is incredibly valuable.
What are three words you’d use to describe Abogados Centro Legal?
Transparent, inclusive, and respectful!
What’s your favorite part about working at Abogados Centro Legal?
I love being able to help immigrants!
If you could have a different job, what would it be?
I’d love to work in the Department of Children as an attorney representing minors.

Doing something you love and feel passionate about.

I’ve lived in Bottega and Birmingham!
