The Temporary Protected Status (TPS) has been an essential tool for many Venezuelans in the United States. Recently, the Department of Homeland Security announced two significant reassignments affecting the Venezuelan community. Here’s a summary of these updates:
Re-registration for current TPS beneficiaries
If you are already a TPS beneficiary as a Venezuelan, it’s crucial to re-register to continue enjoying this benefit. This protection has been extended until September 10, 2025. The re-registration period will be between January 10 and March 10, 2024. To do so, you’ll need to submit the appropriate form and request your work permit from the immigration service.
Automatic work permit extension
For those whose work permit is about to expire or has yet to arrive, the Department of Homeland Security has announced an automatic extension until March 2025. If you find yourself in this situation, you only need your expired work permit and a copy of the Federal Register notification announcing the extension.
New TPS for newcomers
Great news! The introduction of a new TPS is available for Venezuelans who arrived in the United States by July 31 of this year. If you arrived before this date, you must prove your physical presence in the country. Documents like lease contracts, and insurance, among others, will be vital to demonstrate your stay.
Processing Time
Many wonder how long the approval process will take. According to the immigration service, the estimated processing time is between 8 and 13 months.
